I hope the death of this great son of Africa will give us an opportunity to reflect on the ideals that he lived and worked for. The challenges basseting mother Malawi are as just as acute as they were during the days of your struggle. Mwafwa tafwa! Kulira nkhumoza.

Alex Nkosi.

Please allow me to express my deepest sympathies on the death of the great Kanyama Chiume. I got to know him after he returned to Malawi in 1994 when I spent almost a year in Malawi doing research for my Ph.D. thesis on the democratic transition in Malawi. I had the privilege to be taught Malawi history by him. We discussed the political, economic and social situation in Malawi. He even attended my Ph.D. party in Blantyre in 1997. He was a great Malawian and a good and supportive friend. May his Soul rest in peace!

11-27-2007 11:58 AM -- By: Innocent Galinoma Mfalingundi,  From: Kalenga Iringa Tanzania

For years I have been paying tribute to man and women who have contributed to the struggle for survival from slavery times to present . People like Lumumba, Selassie, Biko, Garvey, Toussant L'ouverture, Nkuruma, Luther King, Malcom X, Marley, Mandela, Makandal Daaga, Walter Rodney and many more too numerous to mention. In my book of heroes I respectfully add Brother Kanyama Chiume the son of Africa, Lion of Malawi who I am proudly to say that it has been and still is great to have known this great African, as a neighbor, as a leader, a friend, a Brother and as a Fether. And one of the elders saith unto me, weep not behold the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the root of David hath prevailed to open the book and loose the seven seals tharof. Jah! Rastafari.

It's sad that Kanyama Chiume has passed away without enjoying the fruits of his sweat. May his soul rest in peace.

11-27-2007 7:02 AM -- By: Prof Haroub Othman,  From: University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

I have known Kanyama since 1959 having first heard him speak in Zanzibar where he came with Dr Kamuzu Banda. I have read many of his writings and enjoyed many a conversation with him. Before he left for the US he came to see me at the university, and I urged himm to write his 'Memoirs', which he promised he will do and send me a draft to read. I do not know if he did manage, but if not, then somebody, especially a Malawian, must do it. His footsteps are vividly clear not only on the land of Malawi, but on all this region of East, Central and Southern Africa. Farewell, Comrade Chiume!

It is unfortunate that the late Kanyama Chiume will be remembered for fhghting for a cause that he did not enjoy. Also thanks to Tanzanians for mourning along Malawians, at least from the online newspapers.Let those chronicling the life and achievements of Kanyama Chiume do so sooner than later. Lets read about those. There is also need for reproduction of his autobiographies. May his soul rest in peace.

I was toddler when you left Malawi. As I grew older I heard the gallant stories. Years later I saw a video of your trip (pre-independence) and the commotion it caused in London. It made me really proud. Malawi and indeed the whole pan-African movement has lost a truly great person. To the Chiume family, yayi, phepani nadi. Vyose mwa Ciuta.

My condolences to the family of Kanyama Chiume. He was a foresighted man whose vision of freedom for Malawi got stiffled.

There was nobody Banda feared more than Kanyama Chiume.

May his soul rest peacifully.

My Heart is with you Kwacha, Jessie, Bosi, Tasi, Nathan, Sonia and Miriam. 'KCC' was a good Father who gave it all to you with pride. A simple man with great character, wisdom and knowledge. Easy to talk to and very interesting to listen to. His stories still lingers, he made us laugh and imagine. His choice of words had a way in turning an old story into life. He had enormous pride for Africa particularly Malawi and Tanzania. He was a good storyteller. As he told a story and walked me along the shores of lake Nyasa, he once gave me a recipe on how to prepare a fish meal, he said; you simply need water and salt the fish will cook itself. I laughed! I will forever smile when I think of him, and always be thankful to have known this great father.

May he rest in peace, Dadi genda bwina, yatiwoningani.

Kanyama Chiume defined Malawian politics. Whether he was active or not, he provided the necessary checks and balances required in our emerging democracy, as the unofficial opposition "party" in exile. For this he will always be thankfully remembered as an icon of Malawian opposition politics.

To my friend Miriam and The Chiume's Family,

I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Thier love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.

Though some day we all have to part with those we love, they are not lost. We are always better for having loved.

Miriam and The chiume's family, i'm so sorry for the loss, i am wishing you all strength and comfort at this difficult time. Sometimes there are no perfect words but you're in my thoughts and prayers.

May God Rest his Soul in Eternal Peace. Amen.
