12-27-2007 9:42 AM -- By: Aubrey Chiume,  From: Usisya

What a demise! I can not avoid tears running down my cheeks particularly when I remember him with his brother Jomo Chiume (my father) after his return from exile in 1994. He always used to encourage me to work hard at school and surely he inspired me to be where I am today. To all my cousins (his children), I say let God comfort you during this hard time. I will miss my GREAT UNCLE MURRAY. May his soul rest in eternal peace till we meet again.

Mike and The Chiumes I received Mzee Chiume's demise with great trepidation. I knew the Old man and later in life, going through my law studies; I have come to learn a great deal of what he stood for. My choice of oblation will refer to the propriety and excellence of your late father as an individual person rather than as a political figure, the office in which great injustice was done to him. To Borrow from Sir Francis Bacon, The virtue and faculties of Mzee Chiume i.e. His Intellect, the largeness of his capacity, the faithfulness of his memory the swiftness of his apprehension, the penetration of his judgment and the facility and order of his elocutions where unprecedented. I have no intention of showering the spirit of the old man with empty accolades. But simply put he was a great man.

12-06-2007 2:48 AM -- By: Paul Masawala,  From: Mtengeza Vge, Mangochi

In this time of sorrow for Malihemu Mzee Chiume, let it be known that we can never give enough credit to our hero, for the way of life we enjoy today. We suffered with him in life, we suffer with him on his death. To the younger people, he was a historical figure. To us older folks, he was a living legend. Let the way he lived his life be a testimony to the dedication and passion Malawians in the diaspora have for the betterment of Mother Malawi. Without his unrelentless fight against one party politics, Malawi would not be where it is today. Let the blessings of Allah, God's prophet, be with you.

God bless.

Our deepest condolences to the Chiumes on the passing of this great son of Africa. He was a true hero of the African nationalist movement. Together with Henry Chipembere and the Chisiza brothers,he was one of the architects of Nyasaland's liberation from colonial rule, and the strongest advocate of Malawian multiparty politics.

On behalf of The Masawala, Mapanje,Kantchentche,Lattibu, Mkunga, Malita, Kagunda and Malipa families, RIP.

11-30-2007 9:56 AM -- By: Yevette Richards Jordan,  From: USA

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of a great and compassionate man, a person whose soul was fired with a passion for justice and liberty. I first met Mr. Chiume on a trip to Tanzania in 1991. I was introduced to him by former AFL-CIO international representative Maida Springer who was spending a few months in the country. I was honored to learn from him and have his services as a translator in an an interview with Bibi Titi Mohamed. Now we are the poorer with all three of these giants gone, but the memory of their selfless deeds will live on.
