12-06-2007 2:48 AM -- By: Paul Masawala,  From: Mtengeza Vge, Mangochi

In this time of sorrow for Malihemu Mzee Chiume, let it be known that we can never give enough credit to our hero, for the way of life we enjoy today. We suffered with him in life, we suffer with him on his death. To the younger people, he was a historical figure. To us older folks, he was a living legend. Let the way he lived his life be a testimony to the dedication and passion Malawians in the diaspora have for the betterment of Mother Malawi. Without his unrelentless fight against one party politics, Malawi would not be where it is today. Let the blessings of Allah, God's prophet, be with you.

God bless.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of a great and compassionate man, a person whose soul was fired with a passion for justice and liberty. I first met Mr. Chiume on a trip to Tanzania in 1991. I was introduced to him by former AFL-CIO international representative Maida Springer who was spending a few months in the country. I was honored to learn from him and have his services as a translator in an an interview with Bibi Titi Mohamed. Now we are the poorer with all three of these giants gone, but the memory of their selfless deeds will live on.

11-28-2007 1:27 PM -- By: Sunny Ofili,  From: Nigeria/USA

Africa has lost one of her greatest son! Chiume was a great Pan Africanist whose vision for one Africa remains unfulfilled but necessary for the emancipation of African people.

In 1991, when Chiume was seeking support to oust Banda and was in Nigeria to rally for support, fate linked us and I became his host throughout his two weeks stay in Nigeria. I remember the bumpy ride in a Lagos rickety taxi to meet with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo at his farm at the outskirt of Lagos. I remember quite well how the three of us shared a bowl of pounded yam with bare hands and General Obasanjo, then a successful farmer cracking jokes with his old friend Chiume was reuniting with him.

When Chiume returned to Tanzania after his visit, we lost contact. I relocated to the United States in 1993 but the old man, wise man made such an impression on me that I kept searching for a way to reach him. In 2005 finally called the Malawian Embassy in Washington, DC for assistance in locating him but was disappointed. But I was happy to learn from the official I spoke with that he was doing well in Malawi and was the head of a political party in a post Kamuzu Banda Malawi.

Rest in Peace Mr. Chiume. Africa misses you.

11-28-2007 11:04 AM -- By: Ackim Mwamalumbiri,  From: United Kingdom

You inspired many of us during the darkest hour of Dr Banda's brutal regime while in exile in Tanzania. May God distance you from him in heaven! Rest in eternal peace
